Nor Cal Premier Player Development Program

The Nor Cal Premier Player Development Program seeks to identify top soccer players within each age group, provide specialized training with experienced coaches, and offer opportunities for national and international exposure.   In addition, the Program seeks to recommend some of its strongest players to U.S. Club Soccer's id2 Player Identification Program  and its Regional Training Camps   . These players may also have the opportunity to travel to Italy to participate in pre-season training sessions and friendly games with some professional clubs.

Program Components

Identify the top 25-30 players in Northern California - the NCPSL tech staff would evaluate and recommend players for this group
Provide unique training sessions and play dates with top coaches - expose players to international experience such as tournaments or training.
Showcase players at US Club Soccer's id2 regional camp, college coaches for older age groups
Create league teams to travel to top domestic or international tournaments. NCPSL is working to establish a collaboration with some professional clubs (Chivas Mexico & USA ˆ Vicenza, Chievo Verona, and Padova from Italy) where the top talents would be invited to attend some pre-season training sessions

The selected players will participate in training sessions and games run by Development Program coaches as well as guest coaches. During these play-dates, players will be evaluated and monitored. In the future, the Program plans to enter top tournaments to include international play. It is important for these players to know that it is an Open Pool - i.e players can be dropped or new players added at any time.

History and Status of Program

In 2005, five (5) players from the '92 age group were recommended to the ID2 program in Florida. The boys represented Nor Cal Premier very well:   all (5) played in the all-star game and one player was selected to the national pool.

Earlier this year, Nor Cal Premier started the process of identifying the '93 boys.  It recommended ten (10) players in the '93 age group and twelve (12) players in the '94 age group to US Club Soccer's id2 Regional Training Camp   . In addition, in August 2006, Nor Cal Premier brought in two (2) scouts from an Italian club, Vicenza Calcio   , to observe and evaluate players recommended by local club coaches. By doing so, Nor Cal aims to showcase its talent to professional clubs and allow the clubs to monitor players' progress.

Also in 2005 & 2006, top international coaches ran training sessions

Frans Hoek (Barcelona, Ajax, Holland)
John Owens (Liverpool U18 & England National Team U15)
Paolo Baio (Vicenza)
Giovanni Barbugian (Vicenza)
Pepijn Lijnders

Future of Program

Nor Cal Premier Soccer League has planned a 3-day camp this summer (July31-Aug.02) at Sonoma State for Boys 1992-93-94-95. Professional Club scouts from Italy and college coaches will be attending the event.

Possible Collaboration with Professional Club

Some of those professional Clubs are interested in collaborating with NCPSL to develop talent and expose players to another country's soccer.   There are several possibilities:

Run a camp for selected players.   Coaches from professional Club would run a camp here for selected players (92-93-94-95-96). In addition, they would like to create and maintain an ongoing dialog with the selected players' coaches. The objective:   using both sets of coaches' input, create the best development plan for each player.
Players invited to Professional Club. From the pool of selected players, the top talented players would be invited for 2-3 weeks of pre-season training and friendly games with its teams. Each player would only be responsible for travel expenses from USA to Italy.
NCPSL team to play Internationally.   Create a NCPSL team(s) and spend 10 days training and playing games outside the U.S.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How much does it cost?

Player Identification (for recommended players) and play-date sessions (for selected players) are free.

How much of a commitment is it?

There are approximately 2-6 sessions a year to evaluate the players. Nor Cal Premier selects dates with the fewest potential conflicts (regular season or tournament dates).   However, if a player makes the development pool, he/she is expected to participate. If a player consistently misses the play-dates, the player will be dropped from the pool.

What if my club team has a game?

Nor Cal Premier believes the club should come first. This is why we only meet 2-6 times a year to identify, evaluate, and monitor the players. Nor Cal Premier believes the club is responsible for developing the players. However, the parent, player and coach should consider the importance of the game, and mutually decide the best option for the player.

Is the Nor Cal Premier Player Development Program available for girls?

Nor Cal Premier is currently taking recommendations for girls in the '93 & '94 age groups. Identification sessions will be announced at a future date.

How many players are selected for the Open Pool in each age group?

25-30 players from each age group will be selected for Nor Cal Player Development Program.
