CHANGING GAMES ON THE SCHEDULES
Friday, 06 April 2007
In Norcal, the League Office makes the “final” decision concerning changing games.
This is not a very common occurrence, but here is a sample of their thinking that helps decide when decisions among teams cannot be reached, and it reaches the BOD desk for a “final” arbitrary decision.

There are a few ideas that guide their reasoning:
  1. There are major events that warrant the changing of the schedule.
  2. There are other events that do not warrant changing the schedule.
  3. The team asking for the change, should be willing to accept any reasonable alternative(s) (e.g. bye day or Sundays) that is offered by the other team(s) and should not feel they have a “right” to further demands beyond “asking” for the change.
  4. The teams not asking for the change can only lose their favorable position by  “demanding” an unreasonable solution, e.g. “you play on Sunday, June 3rd or I’m going to let the League Office decide”.
  5. The major factors they look for are “valid reasons” and “reasonable”.

Valid  reasons for changing games (partial listing):    Tournaments, ODP, team Bar Mitzvah, major Club fundraiser where date is not controlled by Club, and other     “major” events too numerous to list.

Reasons not deemed valid for changing a game (very partial listing): coach has a conflict, 2 players are trying out for the ODP,  4 players are going on vacation, and other     controllable and non major events too numerous to list.

The League BOD almost always  expects a home team asking for a  change in a single game for a valid reason to change the game to an away game to be played at the convenience of the team that did not ask to have the game changed. They usually suggest that the game be played on a common bye day or a Sunday.

If an away coach asks that a single game be changed for a valid reason, the game stands as an home game to be played at the convenience of the home team. They suggest that the game be played on a common bye day or a Sunday to be decided by the home team.

Doubleheaders are more difficult to change and sometimes lead to unnecessary harsh words. Please,  always remember your position – if you are asking for the change and the other team has agreed, you should be open to any reasonable alternative. If you have granted the change, offer some alternative dates and you have every reason to believe that one of them will be accepted.

Every effort should be made to keep the doubleheader as a block of games played as scheduled but on a common bye day or a Sunday.

The League Office will always give the teams not asking for the valid change the more favorable decision as long as they have been open to reasonable alternatives, e.g. the team asking for the change has said “we will play on a common “bye day” or any Sunday”.
